Founded in 2011, M-KOPA Solar is a Kenyan company which has developed an innovative pay-as-you-go model in East Africa with solar energy systems.

The innovative business model includes:

·        Product: Small scale solar home systems that provide off-grid households with lighting and phone charging capability.

·        Payment model: Customers pay an initial deposit and pay daily instalments using mobile apps over one year to own the system outright.

·        Technology integration: The M-KOPA system enables remote monitoring through embedded SIM cards.  The system can be disabled if payments are missed.
